How to Keep Gums Healthy

Call Us Today

When it comes to oral care, many people only consider the health of their teeth, but the gums require just as much attention. The same plaque and tartar that cause tooth decay can also lead to gum disease, so strategically targeting the gums each morning and night is of the utmost importance.

The Dangers of Gum Disease

Your gums require cleaning and care just like your teeth. When you neglect to take care of your gums, plaque and tartar accumulate and eventually cause gum disease to develop.

Gum disease begins as gingivitis, which can be identified by red, swollen, and tender gums that bleed too easily. Gingivitis can be quickly resolved with proper brushing and flossing techniques, but if gingivitis is left unattended it leads to the more advanced form of gum disease known as periodontitis. Periodontitis begins with inflammation and bleeding around the teeth and becomes more severe as the gums pull away from the teeth and create pockets of infection. Eventually, the fibers and bone supporting the teeth are destroyed, and the teeth often need to be fully removed.

There are many different preventative measures that you can utilize to keep your mouth safe from gum disease and keep your gums as healthy as possible.

Keeping Your Gums Healthy

The first step to keep your gums safe from disease is to following the recommended brushing and flossing schedule. Brush your gums, teeth, and tongue twice each day, floss once each day. Of course, visiting your holistic dentist twice a year will allow a professional to evaluate your gum health and recommend further action if needed.

In addition to regular cleaning, there are other methods you can use to keep your gums in top form. First, add oil pulling into your routine. At any point during the day, swish a spoonful of coconut or sesame oil around in your mouth for 20 minutes. Doing this will pull all of the dangerous bacteria from your teeth and gums, leaving your mouth significantly cleaner, stronger, and healthier. You can also purchase toothpaste which already contains essential oils such as peppermint, clove, and tea treat oil.

If you smoke, drink excessive amounts of soda, or have a major sweet tooth, try minimizing those habits and replacing sugary and acidic foods and beverages with water, dairy, green tea, nuts, apples, and fibrous snacks. Implementing these various oral care techniques will protect your gums from disease and ensure that your oral health supports your overall wellness.
