True to our name, Natural and Cosmetic Dentistry uses safe and gentle techniques and technologies to unlock the body’s natural ability to heal itself. Platelet Rich Fibrin (PRF) represents one of the many ways we support our patients in Clearwater, Florida, on their oral health journey following dental extractions or if they develop cavitation.
Cavitation explained
Patients may be familiar with the term “cavity.” Dental cavities are holes in the teeth caused by the progressive process of tooth decay. In contrast, a “cavitation” refers to a hole in the jawbone. A cavity may be visible as a dark spot or pit in the teeth; however, cavitation can lurk unnoticed in the jaw. They may arise when a surgical or extraction site fails to heal appropriately; for instance, if a periodontal fiber is not removed completely following the extraction of a wisdom tooth or third molar, cavitation can occur due to a portion of the fibrous ligament being left behind. The bone in the jaw still “reads” the tooth as present, which interferes with the ability of the bone to regenerate itself. Healthy tissue may begin to die as blood supply to the bone is lost. Cavitation is associated with a range of unpleasant symptoms, including chronic pain and pressure, sinus congestion, bad breath, and a bitter or sour taste.
Effective cavitation treatment for total relief
Necrosis or tissue death can spread and destroy nerves, blood vessels, bone, and teeth. So, the cavitated site must be thoroughly cleaned. Beata A. Carlson DDS and Associates offers a non-traumatic alternative to conventional surgical approaches that may be available at other dentists’ practices, which may have contributed to the development of the cavitation in the first place.
As biological and holistic dentistry practitioners, we are privileged to provide gentle techniques to clear affected sites with minimal trauma; for example, regenerative processes are promoted through PRF. A natural healing aid, PRF is derived from patients’ blood. Blood samples are spun in a centrifuge, isolating and purifying natural healing and growth factors. The flow of blood, and the growth of bone and soft tissues, is stimulated. When applied to extraction or cavitated site, PRF helps to regulate inflammation and encourages wounds to heal more quickly.
