Root canals are a standard in dentistry. Many dentists as well as the American Dental Association say that they are safe and a great way to preserve a tooth. However in recent years there have been some concerns about Root Canals: Are they affecting your overall health?

What Is a Root Canal?

A Root Canal is a dental procedure done when the soft tissue inside the tooth has become inflamed or infected. The dead tissue including the root of the tooth is removed along with the bacteria, and the deep cavity is filled, a crown may be the finishing touch after a Root Canal, this seals the tooth however a crown is not necessary in every case.

A Root Canal is done because the tooth is considered dead; it is simply there for aesthetics and to aid in chewing. It is deemed a safe procedure because bacteria is removed along with the tooth decay however this is not 100% accurate, in fact it is unlikely that all the harmful bacteria from inside the tooth can be removed with a Root Canal, leaving harmful bacteria inside the tooth.

The Problem with Root Canals

The problem with the Root Canal process is that not all the harmful bacteria is removed. Many studies have found that at least some harmful bacteria remains in the cavity and is trapped by the filling. This means that there is harmful bacteria trapped in your mouth. Since the tooth no longer has a blood supply, the harmful bacteria inside the tooth can be hidden from the immune system and the Root Canal becomes more infected over time due to bacteria in the mouth. By not having removed all the harmful bacteria a Root Canal could make one sick.

What Health Problems Can Bacteria Cause?

There is always bacteria in your mouth, but when that harmful bacteria turns into infection, it becomes dangerous. When harmful bacteria is left behind after a Root Canal, that harmful bacteria and infection can travel from the mouth, causing abscesses and infections in the head and neck. Harmful bacteria and infection in the mouth can also lead to other infections in the body.
